Mother’s Day Weekend 2020

Mother’s Day Weekend 2020

May 8-10-2020: This weekend was Mother’s Day weekend in lockdown. Unfortunately we have both lost our Mum’s and so every year on this weekend, we do a “tribute” dinner in honour and remember them.

The weekend kicked off on Friday, as I took myself out for a spin on the deadly treadly and was able to enjoy a magnificent autumn day – I couldn’t resist the urge to stop and take in the wonderful autumn colours.

Often I cook our tribute dinner but this year we took the opportunity to support one of the really good local fine dining restaurants, who had started doing home delivery,

Merne at Lighthouse started a “Merne on your Doorstep” multi-course dinner. They delivered it all to our doorstep, with each course wonderfully presented in their own little take-away container, with the hot food just needing warming in the oven.

I dressed up the table a treat, with two bunches of flowers, one for each mum and even did a special menu. We had extra special wines from the cellar, including a special Tempranillo we brought home from Spain, when we did our trip around the Rioja wineries.

Sunday, Mother’s day itself, turned on the weather and we walked our dinner off from the night before along the beach, with the girls having a glorious time.

We closed our annual Mother’s Day remembrance with the Chief Taste Tester turning his hand in the kitchen with his first crack at buffalo wings… He’s not quite as free flowing as me and follows the recipe precisely 🤣 which actually makes him a very good dessert cook where you need to be precise !

He googled a nice sounding recipe for spicy chicken wings and voila – Sunday evening in front of the tele to finish off the weekend. They were faaabulous and he was kind enough to make the sauce in two parts – one part with very little siracha and the other a lot because maaaaaan he likes his food spicy hot !

So a reflective style of “Happy Soul Food” this weekend, reminiscing about our Mum’s no longer with us…
